- Following the 2020-21 NBA season it would be announced - that the league would go through a massive restructuring with the introduction of three divisions bringing an end to the traditional format of the Eastern and Western Conferences and traditional playoffs structures.
- The move was being done in favour of introducing a more European style league, with the hope of not just dominating the North American market but also increasing their global market share.
- The Divisions would be determined by overall conference results from the past three seasons - with the determinations decided by an independent panel. Five teams from each conference would be placed into each of the three divisions, but following the reallocation the conference would no longer be needed.
- D1, D2 & D3 would see teams play each other six times, for a total of 54 regular season games.
DIVISION ONE
Eastern Conference | Western Conference |
Milluwake Bucks Toronto Raptors Philadelphia 76ers Boston Celtic Indiana Pacers | Denver Nuggets Houston Rockets Utah Jazz Los Angeles Clippers Los Angeles Lakers |
DIVISION TWO
Eastern Conference | Western Conference |
Brooklyn Nets Miami Heat Orlando Magic Charlotte Hornets Washington Wizards | Portland Trail Blazers Oklahoma City Thunder Dallas Mavericks San Antonio Spurs Golden State Warriors |
DIVISION THREE
Eastern Conference | Western Conference |
Detroit Pistons Atlanta Hawks Chicago Bulls Cleveland Cavaliers New York Knicks | Phoenix Suns Memphis Grizzlies New Orleans Pelicans Sacramento Kings Minnesota Timberwolves |
- Post-Season would also look very different moving forward.
Division One
- D1 would see the top eight teams take part in a playoff system - made up of five game series.
- The two teams that finished the D1 season in 9th & 10th position would be relegated into D2.
Division Two
- The team that finished D2 in first position would be automatically promoted.
- The teams that finished D2 2nd-5th would compete in a four team playoff series - with the winner promoted into D1.
- The teams that finished D1 in 8th, 9th & 10th would be relegated into D3.
Division Three
- The teams that finished D3 in first and second position would be automatically promoted.
- The teams that finished 3rd-6th would compete in a four team playoff series - with the winner promoted into D2.
Cup Competition
- It would also be announced that a Cup Competition would be introduced for the new season, that would see all teams in all three divisions involved in the bracket format.
- Division 1 teams would all be given a Bye for the first two rounds in the Cup, with D2 & D3 teams facing each other in the first two rounds. The first round would feature four games and the second round would feature six games, with byes being determined by the luck of the draw.
