2002.

The first full year in which the WWE was pretty much the only game in town. They had a stranglehold on the wrestling business until a mysterious group of investors came together with one goal, rewrite wrestling history and show Vince that he is not the one and only. This group of investors founded the National Wrestling Grand Prix or NWGP for short.

The way the NWGP will work is that they will tour for 3 months at a time followed by a 1 month break meaning that the touring schedule would be as follows:

On Tour: January - March
Break: April
On Tour: May - July
Break: August
On Tour: September - December

The touring schedule will immediately reset following a 2 week holiday break in December rather than the full month off. Some familiar faces will be on the roster but some new stars are sure to be created as the National Wrestling Grand Prix aims to become one of the best wrestling companies in history.

NWGP Tour #1 (January - March 2002)

The first tour was obviously dominated by the 16-man tournament to crown the first ever NWGP Heavyweight Champion.

The first round of the tournament saw a few surprises but many of the usual suspects would get victories to advance to the second round. First up, Ken Shamrock absolutely demolished Spanky in a very quick match, forcing him to submit to an Ankle Lock. Christopher Daniels and CM Punk put on quite a show in their matchup and it was CM Punk who would score the win with a stiff kick to the head to get the victory to advance to face Ken Shamrock in the second round. Mike Awesome used his experience to his advantage against AJ Styles to get the victory to advance to the next round. Adam Pearce and Ron Killings surprised everyone with how good of a match they were able to put on but, in the end, Killings got the victory with the Scissor Kick to advance to face Mike Awesome in the next round.

As the first round continued, Eddy Guerrero scored a pretty easy victory over Chris Harris to advance to the next round. Sabu threw all he had at Jerry Lynn in an attempt to get the victory but Lynn managed a rollup to get the win. Bryan Danielson and Low Ki put on what many said was the match of the tournament so far with both men coming close to victory many times but eventually Danielson forced Ki to submit to what he called the Cattle Mutilation. The final match of the first round saw Curt Hennig easily dispatch James Storm with a Perfect-Plex.

Quarterfinals Bracket
Ken Shamrock vs. CM Punk
Mike Awesome vs. Ron Killings
Eddy Guerrero vs. Jerry Lynn
Bryan Danielson vs. Curt Hennig

While the tournament played a big part of NWGP’s first tour, that was not all that went on. The junior heavyweight division got in full swing as Sonny Siaki made his debut in a good match against Jimmy Yang where he claimed victory. Amazing Red would also make his debut shortly after, teaming with Siaki in a loss to the Full Blooded Italians and the NWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion was announced and it was confirmed that the first champion would be crowned during NWGP Tour #2.

Back with the tournament, the quarterfinals kicked off with Ken Shamrock scoring another relatively easy victory against CM Punk, against forcing his opponent to tap out to the Ankle Lock. Mike Awesome and Ron Killings competed in a pretty even match but Awesome would hit him with the Awesome Bomb for the victory. Eddy Guerrero and Jerry Lynn put on a highflying affair in which both men came close to victory on many different occasions and the ending came when Guerrero hit a Frog Splash for the pinfall victory to advance. Bryan Danielson and Curt Hennig’s match shocked the world when Danielson managed to force Hennig to submit to the Cattle Mutilation to get the huge upset victory.

Semifinals Bracket
Ken Shamrock vs. Mike Awesome
Eddy Guerrero vs. Bryan Danielson

As the final four was now set, the other members of the roster looked to make names for themselves such as Samoa Joe who got several victories in a row against local talent before being assaulted by Sabu who would throw a chair at his head, unfazed, Joe would beat Sabu to a bloody pulp before saying that he wants a challenge which would lead to the debut of Kid Kash who would go toe to toe with Joe. The two had several matches over the course of the tour, all of which were won by Joe. Kash would go on to say that he is going to make sure the world knows his name even though he lost by a fluke every single time.

Meanwhile, James Storm and Chris Harris were thrown into a tag team and got a surprising victory over the Full Blooded Italians and proceeded to call themselves America’s Most Wanted. Other teams that formed over the course of this tour was the team of AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels. With the tag team division starting to take shape, the NWGP Tag Team Championship was announced, although, no date was set to crown the first champions.

Back in the tournament, Ken Shamrock and Mike Awesome had a very hard-hitting match where both men slugged away at one another, neither seeming to give an inch to one another and, in the end, Shamrock managed to catch Awesome with a right hook, knocking him unconscious to win the match and advance to the finals. Eddy Guerrero and Bryan Danielson put on a barnburner back and forth bout that was seen as the match of the tour. Danielson nearly forced Guerrero to submit at one point but he fought back and managed a Frog Splash to advance to the finals and following this match, Curt Hennig assaulted Danielson, setting up a feud for the next tour.

In the finals of the NWGP Heavyweight Championship tournament that took place on March 19, 2002, Ken Shamrock and Eddy Guerrero gave it their all to become the first champion but it was Shamrock who would lock Guerrero in the Ankle Lock and force him to submit to become the inaugural champion.

With the first tour in the books, the stars of NWGP embark on their 1 month off before tour #2 kicks off which will crown the first ever NWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion.

Love the idea, roster is awesome. Great start with the first recap, easy to follow. If I wanted to be real picky, I probably would have went for a different first off champ to differentiate from what TNA did in real life, however I understand the idea of going for Shamrock due to his WWE star power and what not.

Really looking forward to seeing how this progresses now you've got a World Champ. Good luck mate.

NWGP Tour #2 (May - July 2002)
The second tour was pretty much dominated by the junior heavyweight division as the race to crown the first ever NWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion was on. Early on in the tour, the debut of Rey Mysterio, Jr. was the biggest story as he would score wins over Sonny Siaki and AJ Styles in consecutive shows. It was announced that a 6-man elimination challenge would be held in order to determine the inaugural champion and that qualifying matches would take place. Mysterio, Jr. would be the first to qualify for the match followed by Jerry Lynn and Amazing Red. The fourth person to qualify for the elimination challenge was the debuting Taka Michinoku followed by Kid Kash who made it clear that he was going to be the first champion. The final qualifier for the match was Low Ki who won a last chance fatal four way match.

On June 19, 2002, Rey Mysterio, Jr. would become the first NWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion by last eliminating Kid Kash who would not let Mysterio, Jr. celebrate for long, beating him down and saying that he is going to be the first challenger and will be the first champion before hitting a Brainbuster onto the title belt.

While this is going on, New Jack would make a surprising debut, claiming that he had some unfinished business with someone in NWGP which would turn out to be Mike Awesome who he would brutally assault with a steel chair. Awesome would not take this lightly and would call New Jack out the next show and the two would have a pull-apart brawl before being booked in a no holds barred contest, which would be a bloody affair that was won by Mike Awesome.

New Jack was absolutely livid and turned his attention to another former ECW star in Sabu and would beat him down but would soon be forced out of the company after no-showing several events, effectively ending the storyline before it began.

Curt Hennig would call out Bryan Danielson and compliment him and say that he is very clearly the future of the business but that he is the present and challenges Danielson to a Best-of-7 series with bragging rights on the line. Danielson accepted and lost Match #1 but was successful in winning matches #2 and #3 to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Hennig would win the next 2 matches to take a stranglehold 3-2 lead and he would win Match #6 to win the series but would shake Danielson’s hand before making it clear that he wanted the NWGP Heavyweight title.

Adam Pearce would begin to build his resume scoring victories over Spanky and Jimmy Yang.

Jay and Mark Briscoe of CZW fame would make their debut scoring a victory over AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels. Following this, Elix Skipper would make his debut to team up with Low Ki as Triple X and a five-way dance was scheduled to crown the first ever NWGP Tag Team Champions, a match that would be won by the James Maritato and Tony Mamaluke, the Full Blooded Italians on June 29, 2002.

Inaugural NWGP Heavyweight Champion Ken Shamrock would continue his feud with Eddy Guerrero with Guerrero screwing with Shamrock show after show until a match was booked between the two for the title which was won by Shamrock who would retain the title. Following the match, the biggest signing in NWGP history so far, Bill Goldberg would make his debut, taking out Shamrock with a huge Spear and a Jackhammer, before holding up the NWGP Heavyweight title.

Tour #3 (September - December 2002)
The biggest story of the final tour of 2002 was the debut of Bill Goldberg in NWGP. Goldberg would run through almost the entire undercard of NWGP, winning every single match before setting his eyes on the prize that he very clearly came for, the NWGP Heavyweight Championship that was held by Ken Shamrock. Goldberg would call out Shamrock at event after event but Shamrock had no desire to face him until Goldberg would find him backstage and beat him to a pulp, shocking the world as “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” had never been beaten like that before.

Shamrock would be hesitant to put his title on the line and only agreed to it if Goldberg could win a gauntlet match, something he easily did before being assaulted by Shamrock with a steel chair. The match between the two was scheduled for the main event of the first ever WrestleWar event.

Meanwhile, in the junior heavyweight division, Kid Kash would get his match against Rey Mysterio, Jr. on September 13, 2002, a match he would win to become the new NWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion. His first challenger for the title would be Taka Michinoku but Kash would dispatch him as well to keep a stranglehold on his championship.

After a loss to Bill Goldberg, Curt Hennig would decide that he wanted to take a protégé under his wing and that man ended up being none other than “The American Dragon” Bryan Danielson. The two would team up and win several tag team matches before capturing the NWGP Tag Team Championship on October 2, 2002, defeating James Maritato and Tony Mamaluke, the Full Blooded Italians. The team of Hennig and Danielson co-existed very well in subsequent weeks.

Following his loss of the Junior Heavyweight title, Rey Mysterio, Jr. kind of floated around the card until former an alliance with fellow Latino, Eddy Guerrero. The two would work well as a team and win several matches before deciding that it was time to challenge for the tag titles, they lost the first match but were determined to get another shot and that rematch was scheduled for the first ever WrestleWar event.

The tag team of AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels was not as secure as it seemed and after back to back losses, Daniels turned on his partner and beat him down and at the next event, Daniels would introduce himself as “The Fallen Angel” and introduced his “heavy” as Samoa Joe and said that darkness has descended upon NWGP but Styles was not hearing any of this and would attack him only to be choked out by Samoa Joe. The two would go back and forth for several weeks with Samoa Joe always being the man to get involved on behalf of Daniels until a steel cage match (the first in NWGP history) would be scheduled between Daniels and Styles for the WrestleWar event.

Jerry Lynn would step up to be the next to challenge Kid Kash for the Junior Heavyweight Championship but Kash refused to defend against him leading to Amazing Red and Sonny Siaki getting involved in the feud which led to a 4-way ladder match for the title being scheduled for WrestleWar.

CM Punk struggled to get any real momentum going in the early weeks of the tour but after cutting a promo about how he is straight edge, meaning he has never used drugs or alcohol unlike some members of the roster, he caught fire. Punk would go on a winning streak before calling out Sabu as the biggest abuser on the roster, telling him that he is shocked Sabu is still alive. Sabu was none too pleased by this and would attack Punk several weeks in a row before a no holds barred match would be scheduled between the two for WrestleWar.

America’s Most Wanted and The Briscoe Brothers would get involved in a heated feud which saw several violent attacks by both teams. The Briscoes’ weapon of choice was a leather strap which led to a strap match being scheduled between the two teams at WrestleWar.

Adam Pearce continued his winning ways, notching wins over Low Ki and Elix Skipper in singles contests before coming face to face with Ron Killings who promised to end his winning ways and claw his way to the top of NWGP. Killings said that he beat Pearce once and will do it again and a match at WrestleWar was booked.

The NWGP Intercontinental Championship was hyped during the tour but a date that the first champion will be crowned was not confirmed.
