a.) I focussed on the media in Vietnam for paper one.
b) Vietnam is and has been a communist nation for several years which, like China, complicates the media system. The country has been under scrutiny for its historical and new laws that limit national expression through media; it is noted that laws may not be lifted anytime soon (Human Rights Organization, 2011).
c) Most of the media is state-owned in Vietnam. Their constitution even states that media is to be state-monitored and only showcase the country and it's government in a positive way (Vietnam constitution, 1992). state-owned newspapers are subsidized by the government and used as a propaganda vehicle. There are news outlets that are privately owned, but laws make unbiased reporting extremely difficult. Currently, the government is creating laws to limit citizens voices on social media and are being criticized by several human rights watch organizations as a result.
d) A print media example is Nhan Dan and a broadcast example is Voice of Vietnam.
e) I was mostly surprised by the new local laws against social media conversation regarding the government and news. This limitation on individual rights makes it even more difficult for the citizens of this country to find a voice. Since the media is closely watched by the government it is even more important that individuals be able to discuss current events; new laws restricting this make it nearly impossible for citizens to engage.
My Response
Hannah,
I am not surprised at the layout and control that it has over it's media outlets, most communist countries have this structure from what I've read. You expressed surprise about the laws relating to social media, I'm shocked that such sites haven't been blocked. Especially since the Arab Spring which basically utilized social media to overthrow the government. I'd expect even stricter regulations of these sites by similar countries. I'm disappointed we didn't hear anything in regards to the classic 80's movie Good Morning Vietnam - Intelligence - YouTube

thank you for the unnecessary Youtube link. I do not appreciate being mocked; your link adds no educational value to your comment. Do research before you attempt to belittle someone with your unrelated cultural reference. Voice of Vietnam: VOV Online Newspaper

I would like to inform you of the following.
Recently you have made postings which have become below the
expected level and have no connection with the subject matter of the course.
One
student, your classmate was offended by your comments. Some postings do not have
substance and do not make sense and are irrelevant
to our discussions. Hence
they were deleted.
To be honest your negative inputs were tolerated in the hope
that you might stop. Instead they have gone worst. It is my duty as instructor
to
protect the interest of the Group so that smooth interactions are taking place.
,
If this does not stop immediately as of Friday December 5 7:00pm EST then you will be giving me no choice except to lock you out
which I regret to do. Please take this as a last warning. At the same time you
will be reported to the appropriate academic unit.
Therefore, I urge you to carefully give thought to the above
matter and to refrain from polluting the group’s discussions, and to
stick to
responding to the questions asked and to make comments that have relevance to
the course.
Keep up with the correct and expected interactions. Stay on
course.
I want you to successfully complete the course. Assist me in doing
that.

I do however have to express my disappointment in this class. I’ve been warned once that was at the beginning of the semester. I have used clips multiple times and nothing NOTHING has been said about them via email or in the grade forms. You yourself commented on the Kashmir clip and LEFT IT IN.
My clip was not offensive nor was it condescending it was merely an attempt to break up some of the monotony of an online class. While her article didn’t mention the Robin Williams movie it is however loosely based on fact so it could have been included in an article about Vietnams broadcasting history (especially during wartime)
My post in response to Student 2 was an accurate post and was pretty courteous considering how he was miss using the terminology.
My post to Student 3 in regards to Russia were accurate and the You Tube link in his post is relevant as it gives an example of Russian Media as it is one of the few Russian clips to have gone “viralâ€
I have also now commented on my comments of 3 of my peers I believe you only require 2 responses, thus showing my willingness to go above what is asked for (again we’ll keep in mind that aside from the one time nothing was ever said to me about my post)
This is also not the first time I’ve written you about my disappointment have you ever addressed it? No, perhaps if you had it wouldn’t have to go to a place where you threaten me with being “reported to the appropriate academic unitâ€
I’m not actually trying to be an ass in the class I’m trying to make it interesting, I’m a media student and professionally a radio DJ I simply can’t be boring.
I don’t see anything wrong with the majority of my post perhaps one or two comments within a post were unnecessary but enough to out weight the merit in them I don’t think so. As it says in your guidelines don’t post anything you wouldn’t in public, I understand that statement I’d post these things in public.
I am sorry that some have felt it disruptive perhaps they should have just brushed it off as the would have to do in real life. As I’ve said I’ve no plan to make any further comments on any discussions I’d simply like to take the Exam and be done with it. But real life is not a sterile environment like this online class was envisioned as.
