Bill Simmons and David Shoemaker on making the doc:

“It was certainly the strangest documentary process I’ve ever been involved with,” Simmons said on the show.

Shoemaker says Vince was often late to shoot, if he showed up at all.

“I don’t think Vince – it sounds so weird to say – I’m not sure Vince knew what it meant to do the documentary and I’m not sure that he knew what story he wanted to tell,” Shoemaker said. “I don’t even know if he knows who he is enough to tell that story.”

“Even when he was eager, he wasn’t there on time or on the days that he was supposed to be there.”

“He always had people with him. There was always people, kind of, lingering in the background making sure nothing weird happened,” Simmons added.

“Yean and reminding him of things in his past. There was always a team,” Shoemaker responded.

Chris Smith (Tiger King) directed the docuseries. Simmons and Shoemaker noted that he is one of the best in the industry.

“Chris Smith, the entire production team have done so many documentaries of this sort, and of all sorts. They’ve been working in this world forever,” Shoemaker continued. “This is the guy that did The Tiger King, and none of them had ever experienced a working situation like we encountered in Stanford, Connecticut.”

“We would show up to shoot and then just all day long be getting updates from Vince’s secretary about his ETA. Six hours, eight hours before the shoot, pushing it back an hour, pushing it back another hour.”

“Then he would roll in at 11 p.m., pitch black, with his little crew around him and shake everybody’s hand,” Shoemaker continued.

“It was just such a bizarre situation.”

Shoemaker and Simmons noted that they could have made a 10-part series with the footage they had.

“We had four hours of Vince’s interview on the cutting room floor because he sounded like a frog one day. He didn’t have a voice. There was so much good material but I think the story that Chris and his team were able to tell was pretty amazing,” said Shoemaker.

Simmons added that there was a story involving Vince McMahon and Evel Knievel that didn’t make the final cut.

Tbf I will catch the cliff notes but a lot of interview being done before the Grant charges came out, I don't want to judge people unfairly based on that
That's a very moderate answer and I like it Roy. Just keep outta of it mantra.

Six Episodes. Binge watching them all. It's about the man who took over the whole of The USA yeah some territories didn't wanna work with him like Old Anderson Georgia Championship Wrestling turned into WCW not many people realize this . We know but casuals don't and I think the proof is in the product .

Look at the numbers WWE are doing record business and it's watchable again which I thought would never happen. It's obviously going to paint him in a bad way that's what gets views and more view more money . The People who made the show want to make money from this and I'm just explaining that it's all about the money.

Vince sounds very suspect though not gonna lie in some of his talking about certain things

Linda was 13 Vince was 16 when he met her, that's fucking vile if he did do anything with her.

Vince stepped on anyone or anything that got in his yes he's successful and he's done some great things for wrestling but AEW is my home now and I like WWE. But he's hated in some circles for taking over everywhere that was the start of vision. Was the monster within kept deep. Within himself . I remember the divas as a kid . My mum thought in was watching lorn when sable.wws on TV once she went nuts. It took a good hour for her to calm down .

More details on Vince switching PR firms ahead of the documentary from Meltzer:

Prior to the release of the Netflix documentary on his life, Vince McMahon hired Edendale Strategies as his new public relations and media strategies firm, pivoting from Sitrick and Company.

He had hired Sitrick and Company five months ago to help rebuild his image in the wake of the lawsuit filed by Janel Grant.
Post Wrestling and Brandon Thurston reported yesterday that McMahon was no longer working with Sitrick when Michael Sitrick told them that they were no longer working together.

Those close to the situation said that McMahon had recently hired Edendale Strategies and President Tony Freinberg who founded Edendale in 2018, to represent him going forward.

Sources close to the situation said McMahon made the switch because he believed the new company was more up-to-date with the modern media landscape, notably having a better understanding of the digital and online modern reporting landscape.

Oh man these are some hilarious quotes in hindsight about Vince and everyone else saying he's never retire in the doc filmed like 6 months to a year before he actually announced that first retirement :lol

Vince McMahon:

“No, I don’t see myself ever retiring. I never understood why people stop growing. When you stop growing, you die.
Some people are like ‘I want to retire one day.’ What are you going to do when you retire? I have no sympathy for people like that. So, go die."

Take your own advice and die then

Other:
“Vince will never retire." - Hulk Hogan

“Do I think Vince will ever stop? No. I don’t think he’ll ever stop because he loves it, it’s not work to him. - John Cena

“I cannot imagine a life with Vince McMahon not being the main dude in WWE. As long as he has breath in his lungs" - Shawn Michaels.

“What do I think it would take for Vince to retire? A nuclear bomb exploding,” - Booker T before the episode cut to coverage of Vince stepping down amid a misconduct promo in 2022.

I think we all had the same thought process before the shit came out.

Most of us thought he’d be running shit til he died.

Netflix releases all their episodes at once, right? They’re not like Disney+ where you gotta wait a week?

Cause I’m off my day job tomorrow so I might watch it before going to my night job
