I have to say him getting in the headset instead of a microphone made it feel like producer Vince legitimately trying to call an audible on the show.

This is genius storytelling.

And CM Punk was never seen in a WWE ring again. John Cena would go on to win a tournament to crown a new champion before losing the title to a Daniel Bryan cash in at WrestleMania.
