In this day and age I'm giving a kid a phone so he can contact me in an emergency. Not a smart phone but a brick phone.

Thats where this thing call responsibility as a parent kicks into place. If your kids depend on you (which they do), a person will stay sober when their children need them. My father was an alcoholic, and I swore I would be a better father than he was.
