Hip hop star Megan Thee Stallion's song Neva Play is now the opening theme song for WWE’s Friday Night Smackdown, but at one point there were expectations that she would instead partner with Mercedes Mone in All Elite Wrestling, PWInsider.com can confirm.

This past February, Megan Thee Stallion and Mercedes Mone met while at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Japan as they were fans of each other. The meeting opened up negotiations between Megan’s manager Mike B of Roc Nation and Mone’s manager Keven Undergaro.

We are told that after the two sides had agreed to do something together, Mone publicly mentioned the idea while promoting AEW All In: London, noting that she was hoping to get Stallion in the ring in AEW. There had been conversations about the two doing something together in WWE as far back as 2021.

After Mone went public, WWE made the deal to have Stallion’s song Neva Play, which as you might imagine, caught the Mone circle by surprise. Whether this means the end of any potential Mone-Stallion alliance remains to be seen, but obviously, the WWE deal didn't help.

If they rated IWC reaction to the song, it might have them wishing they let AEW take her
Most of the hate for the theme song has been racist weirdos tbf. I don't care for her music but people saying "hip hop has nothing to do with wrestling" are just dumb

I haven't seen that one but I'm pretty sure the song itself has wrestling references in it so that's even funnier :lol and if not the exact song, she has multiple with references anyway

It’s crazy how many rap artists like wrestling and make references to it in their songs. The people saying that wrestling should be rock music only must not have been paying attention to wrestling over the last 20 years or so.

Yeah all you gotta do is say you don't like the song instead of inventing reasons why everyone else isn't supposed to like it either. I don't think it's good lmao

All this fuss with WWE and Megan is great exposure for both her brand along with WWE.

I haven't seen any racist tweet about it, people who don't like it like myself just think it's a shit song and/or it doesn't fit the intro.
It's too soft and slow to hype up the show IMO.

It's been more hip hop than rock for a long time to the point I enjoy when someone has a cool heavy one. Def a weird take that it should b only rock even if it tickles my fancy more. No opinion on the song. Id still be cool if she showed up n to me i would not care as Mercedes or AEW if she was still interested n she did a wwe song. Who cares that's just business not signing a pledge of loyalty

Also don't think wwe swooped in n it's very likely just a coincidence. This isn't like signing someone that got a good reaction on that one aew appearance

As a metalhead, I wouldn't mind something like this

or

Stallion's twerk music just doesn't fit a wrestling intro for me

Sucks we might not get something anytime soon between Megan and Mercedes because they fit each other like Gloves for sure with their personalities. I've always grew up on Hip Hop and Rap it was probably the early 2010 to where I started to broaden my horizons with Music outside of Hip Hop and Rap. I hope Megan getting involved with WWE it makes more known Artists of today in that Genre or talent we never expected to do something with WWE actually happening in the future.
