A Tampa man recently released from a drug rehabilitation program is behind bars after attacking his parents and leaving his step-father in critical condition, Tampa Police said.
Police arrested 35-year-old James Archie on East 22nd Avenue at 1:23 a.m. Thursday morning.
According to the affidavit, after being released from a rehab program, Archie went to live with his mother, 54-year-old Hazel Fann, and his step-father, 61-year-old Daniel Fann.
His parents suspected Archie of using drugs again and they wouldn’t give him money.
Archie became combative and his parents asked him to leave. Archie left the home, but later returned through an unlocked bedroom window.
He overheard his mother talking about him, became angry, confronted his mother and repeatedly hit her, knocking her to the ground.
Her husband, who is partially paralyzed, tried to help her, but police say Archie repeatedly beat his step-father in the head with his mother's walking cane.
The suspect allegedly kicked Daniel while he was lying on the ground unconscious.
Archie grabbed a knife and threatened to kill his mother if she did not unlock the burglar bars on the door so he could leave. His mother complied and the suspect fled the scene.
During the struggle, Hazel was able to call 911, before the suspect broke her phone.
An officer was able to get information about where the suspect was located from people who knew the suspect.
Officers found the suspect at 26th Street and Lake Avenue and arrested him.
Police said Archie threatened to harm the detectives that were interviewing him. He struggled with the officers and they had to restrain him in order to take him to jail.
Daniel was transported to Tampa General Hospital with life threatening injuries, where he is in critical condition.
