A Californian man who put his 17-month-old son inside a hot oven in a fit of rage to "teach him a lesson" about kitchen safety has been jailed for one year.
Gregory Colver, 21, initially told police he was asleep when his young son gave himself second and third degree burns by turning on the oven and climbing inside on December 28 last year.
But he was arrested by police two days later, and confessed that he had put the child inside the appliance to "teach him a lesson about the dangers of a hot oven", San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Colver held his child's feet inside the hot appliance after the young boy started banging on the oven door while he was making a pizza. When the boy tried to free himself from his father's grasp he fell onto the hot surface inside and burned his legs.
Colver's girlfriend, the child's mother, was at work at the time of the incident.
Police decided to investigate the matter further when they found inconsistencies in Colver's and his girlfriend's version of events.
Colver was convicted of felony child endangerment and child cruelty and sentenced to a year in prison last Friday.
With time already served, Colver will be back on the streets in around two months and will be forced to attend parenting classes and counselling.
Disgusting that someone could do this. Just shows that some people should not have children. Lucky to only get one year and he really shouldn't be allowed to see the child when he gets out.
