A Californian man who put his 17-month-old son inside a hot oven in a fit of rage to "teach him a lesson" about kitchen safety has been jailed for one year.

Gregory Colver, 21, initially told police he was asleep when his young son gave himself second and third degree burns by turning on the oven and climbing inside on December 28 last year.

But he was arrested by police two days later, and confessed that he had put the child inside the appliance to "teach him a lesson about the dangers of a hot oven", San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Colver held his child's feet inside the hot appliance after the young boy started banging on the oven door while he was making a pizza. When the boy tried to free himself from his father's grasp he fell onto the hot surface inside and burned his legs.

Colver's girlfriend, the child's mother, was at work at the time of the incident.

Police decided to investigate the matter further when they found inconsistencies in Colver's and his girlfriend's version of events.

Colver was convicted of felony child endangerment and child cruelty and sentenced to a year in prison last Friday.

With time already served, Colver will be back on the streets in around two months and will be forced to attend parenting classes and counselling.

Disgusting that someone could do this. Just shows that some people should not have children. Lucky to only get one year and he really shouldn't be allowed to see the child when he gets out.

What a fucking spastic, that's such a dumb thing to do. I can't believe that all the kid did was bang on the oven door, yet his punishment is to be held feet first inside a hot oven and as a result get burns on his legs. That is the definition of bad parenting.

Irresponsible, stupid, and downright heartless. I hope they take the child away from the guy, it'd be foolish of them not to. I hate to see things like this, the one positive is the child is still alive.

Terrible parenting. If the kid was banging on the oven door then you teach it not to, although at that young age it probably won't work, so the next best option is to use some of those kiddie gates where you can section off parts of the house so he can't go near the oven when it is turned on. Looking at that mug shot he looks like a feral.
