A 64-year-old man died Sunday during the swim portion of Sunday's Nautica New York City Triathlon, according to officials.
"We are deeply saddened to report the death," said a statement from Race Director Bill Burke.

The man was treated by emergency medical staff at the event site and then transported to Roosevelt Hospital.

A female athlete also suffered a medical problem during the swim event, but Burke's statement failed to specify the nature of the trouble. She was also treated by on-site medical staff and was also sent to Roosevelt Hospital, where she was in critical condition Sunday night.

The Nautical New York City Triathlon is an Olympic distance race, consisting of a 1,500-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10-kilometer run, according to the event's website.

The swim portion of Sunday's event was held in the Hudson River, the biking portion was on Manhattan's West Side highway, and the run was in Central Park
