A Moreno Valley man is behind bars on charges of torture and child abuse involving his girlfriend's child.
Police responded to a call of an injured child that was brought into the emergency room of a local hospital around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Authorities determined the child had been injured at a residence in the 24300 block of Dracaea Avenue.
Detectives questioned the child's mother and her boyfriend about the injuries, but said they received conflicting accounts of what had happened.
Police then interviewed neighbors and obtained a search warrant for the family's home.
It was finally determined that the mother's boyfriend, 25-year-old Jesse McDowell, was watching the child when the injuries happened.
McDowell was arrested and booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of child abuse and torture.
The child remains hospitalized in critical condition.
