HAMILTON -- Most days are peaceful for Ronald Stewart.
The 66-year-old retired painter from Hamilton enjoys quiet times on his porch and meals with his wife.
He was on his way to Culver's to grab lunch for the two of them on Monday when he was attacked.
He said was driving down Highway 129 and was a left on Hampshire Road.
“Car in front of me went on and I wasn't watching the light, so the guy behind me blowed his horn. I had the window down in my little jeep, I said ‘OK, OK,’†he said.
But Stewart said that as he was waiting to turn on to Princeton Road …
“That's when he jumped out of his car and came to me, called me some names that I can't tell you here and said he was going to kill me, and he went in his back pocket and I said, ‘Oh God, this guy’s got a gun,’†Stewart said.
Instead of a gun, the man pulled out a ball-peen hammer. Stewart said the man reached through the open window and started swinging.
At the same time, witnesses started calling 911.
“He got out of his car and walked up to the car in front of him and was hitting that man with a hammer,†one caller said. “The man is screaming and cussing at him.â€
“If it had been a pistol, I believe he would've killed me,†Stewart said.
Stewart said he was lucky to escape with bruises and some muscle damage.
Police have made no arrests so far. Stewart said that what he wants most of all is an apology.
