In the 1980's and 1990's the writers tended to make the villains do things that made it impossible to sympathise with them. There are many examples, but some of them really stand out like...
The Punisher (1989)
Franco, the Mafia boss, is fighting Frank Castle to make sure he and his son survive and make their family the most powerful and influencial, but the way he goes about it is supposed to cause rejection. They made him step on a knife wound on Frank's leg and later try to either smother him with his hand, or stick his fingers through his eyes.
Now, why would the people behind films like this want to go to such lengths to make us be against the villain?
