Also I should add a disclaimer that there are some absolutely atrocious games included in these rankings

I’m kinda thinking of trialling a system next year, whereby as a host you can specify whether you want your game to be a “ranked” game or an “unranked” game.

If you want it to be ranked, it will need to be checked by at least one experienced player who volunteers (unless the host is a trusted host). Obviously it will then count towards the rankings.

If the host wants it to be unranked then they will not need their game checking, can be bastard etc (still warn people if your game is bastard tho), can try out new things and hopefully people won’t take it as seriously or get so mad over it. Obviously then the host can choose whether or not they want to award post game honours, rather than it being mandatory. Just generally, unranked = a lot more freedom for hosts

Thoughts?

Seems like a good compromise, never cared much if a game "counted" or not lol if I'm playing it then I'm playing to win whether o get points kept up with or not

It make me more likely to make something since I could make it unranked and not worry to much about fucking up to bad

I think even sans-ranking , I think all hosts need to be upfront about the type of game in the signups (bastard, role madness, un-balance) . dont think there's been an outrageous setup (ive played in) outside the classic barry game but that was fully disclaimed lol

So do I, but it’s also extremely annoying when you’re losing or never stood a chance because the setup absolutely sucks! And then I think it effects the rankings too much because if a game is massively catered towards one team, it’s almost entirely down to the luck of the draw rather than gameplay

But obviously we don’t want all of our games to follow the same formula because it would be boring. We want hosts to be able to experiment or be ambitious of even just make a funny game.

I feel like going into a game and knowing whether it’s ranked/unranked would also help the player get in the right mindset for it and again, not get so mad when shit goes against them etc

Well if you’d specify it’s unranked then it’s totally up to you whether you want to get it checked or not. If you don’t want the pressure of a ranked game but DO want your game to be considered a good game then yeah, I’d always recommend that you get it checked

im not opposed one way or another. I just dont want to be traumatized by resurrections and janitors in the same game unless I know it could be a fuckery so ya i suppose ranking/checking would be appropriate. my only concern which you kind of addressed is i just dont want to be too strict on whats considered ranked as to not alienate/keep things interesting. like i obviously didnt play a lot of these other crazier games it seems though so im generally having fun regardless

It won’t be super strict about being ranked, if you get it checked by someone then it’s all fine and dandy. That’s the only requirement other than you know, it has to be fairly well balanced

If we use that approved hosts thread, fine by me. I do think labelling games as role madness or vanilla is a good idea as well.

I'd also label if you're using QTs in the OP too though I think most are now using the conversations. So people will know.

Sure, I’ll create a new host thread at some point. Obv no point starting it this late in the year but I’ll get it ready for next year I’ll make some kind of template that everybody had to include at the top of their signup thread
