Firefighters are battling a brush fire in the Pacific Palisades that quickly spread to 200 acres Tuesday and triggered mandatory evacuations amid warnings from weather forecasters of "extreme" wildfire risks.

With the blaze exploding in size within an hour, fire authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for homes in the area around noon along with some evacuation warnings. At 10:30 a.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department first reported the blaze, saying it sparked near 1190 North Piedra Morada Dr. and was estimated to be 20 acres at that time.

An hour later, at about 11:30 a.m., the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, estimated the wildfire was 200 acres.

A brush fire fueled by dangerously high-speed Santa Ana winds threatened homes in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles on Tuesday, prompting mass evacuation orders for thousands of residents and power shutoffs.

"Evacuate now from the area of Palisades Area," the City of Los Angeles warned on X. "Those not in the evacuation area should shelter in place."

Pacific Palisades, a neighborhood of Los Angeles, has 9,400 homes with 27,000 residents, according to the Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce. The area has been touted by real estate brokers as an oasis of tranquility and understated elegance and home to numerous A-list celebrities.

Wildfires are ripping through Los Angeles County, fanned by hurricane-strength wind gusts as firefighters struggle to combat the blazes. The winds showed no signs of letting up early Wednesday and may intensify in the hours ahead, as conditions remain extremely difficult for firefighters. The Palisades Fire, which broke out near the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, has burned at least 2,921 acres, forcing at least 30,000 people to evacuate. The Eaton Fire, which erupted to the northeast, has burned an estimated 1,000 acres, prompting evacuation orders for over 52,000 residents. In the north, the Hurst Fire grew to 500 acres in just four hours. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) declared a state of emergency and said early Wednesday that more than 1,400 firefighters, first responders and officials have been deployed “to combat these unprecedented fires in LA.”

More updates

Two civilians have died in the Eaton Fire – burning in the Angeles National Forest, the Altadena area of Los Angeles County and Pasadena – county Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone said Wednesday morning.

Their causes of death are unknown, Marrone said.

There also have been “a number of significant injuries” and over 100 structures destroyed by the fire, Marrone said.

The cause of the Eaton Fire is also unknown and under investigation, he said.

As wildfires raged across Los Angeles on Tuesday, crews battling the Palisades blaze faced an additional burden: Scores of fire hydrants in the Pacific Palisades had little to no water flowing out.

“The hydrants are down,” said one firefighter in internal radio communications.

“Water supply just dropped,” said another.

By 3 a.m. Wednesday, all water storage tanks in the Palisades area “went dry,” diminishing the flow of water from hydrants in higher elevations, said Janisse Quiñones, chief executive and chief engineer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the city’s utility.

A fast-moving wildfire has erupted in the Hollywood Hills, prompting a mandatory evacuation order for a wide area of the historic Hollywood entertainment district.

Crews with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to reports of the flames at 2350 Solar Drive, near Astral Drive, just after 5:30 p.m.

Fire officials estimated the wildfire had charred at least 20 acres in the Runyon Canyon area as of 6:30 p.m.

More than 2,000 homes, businesses and other buildings have been damaged or destroyed and at least five people are dead in wildfires scorching communities across Los Angeles County, making this one of the most destructive firestorms to hit the region in memory.

The five bodies were found in three structures in Altadena, where the Eaton fire exploded Tuesday night, giving residents little time to flee. It is estimated that more than 1,000 structures have been destroyed in the Palisades fire and another 1,000 either damaged or destroyed in the Eaton fire, according to the L.A. County Fire Department.

Officials started a grid search and rescue operation in the Eaton area Saturday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said during a news conference Sunday.

“Unfortunately, during that search, we did locate three deceased,” Luna said. “As these searches continue, I unfortunately anticipate that those numbers will increase.”

Luna said they plan a similar search operation on the north side of the county soon.

At least 16 deaths connected to the wildfires have been reported: 11 from the Eaton Fire and five from Palisades, the Los Angeles County medical examiner said Saturday.
