Sheamus to challenge Gunther for the Intercontinental Title on the season premiere of SmackDown on Oct. 7​

The explosive season premiere of Friday Night SmackDown on Oct. 7 will feature a huge title showdown!

Intercontinental Champion Gunther will once again go to war with Sheamus in a highly-anticipated WWE Clash at the Castle title rematch!

The two hard-hitting Europeans fought tooth-and-nail in their historic Premium Live Event matchup. Though The Celtic Warrior did not capture the gold, the incredible ovation he received from the crowd in Cardiff, Wales was a testament to his gritty effort. Now, the WWE Universe and the locker room can’t wait to see the carnage that unfolds in the sequel.

The X-factor of the match will likely be the potential impact of The Brawling Brutes and Imperium. All parties love a good fight, and time will tell if there will be anything left of the blue brand when all is said and done.

For some reason, I believe Gunther still goes over. If Sheamus was going to win, it would've been at the Clash (much like Drew McIntyre). This will be a GREAT match that I'm glad we get to repeat.

Sheamus would be a great challenger for Roman Reigns at Survivor Series imo. Fans have gotten behind the Celtic Warrior in recent memory, especially with the CatC match.

If there's anyone who can legitimately dethrone Gunther, it's Sheamus. That likely lends itself to maybe a rubber match at Extreme Rules, which I'm not opposed to either.

I feel like this could be a title that goes to someone like Strowman or Kross, two main event caliber guys who won't win the world title with Reigns around. Both Strowman and Kross could also dethrone Gunther and it make sense.

Extreme Rules would be the night after so I doubt they would do a 3rd match then. I'd love to see them get the WarGames match though, that would be absolutely nuts.

I didn't realize Extreme Rules was that weekend. It's still possible. Have them kick off the show, Sheamus win, rubber match the night after. They'd be dead afterwards though.

Wonder why they announced it on social media two weeks prior to the event though, but I love to see it. It's the signs of a stable creative room. Raw and SmackDown scripts used to be written an hour before the show began, sometimes being re-written during the show. Now, we get a match to hype these next 2 weeks on SmackDown!

Probably because of the praise the first match got, alongside this show being the season premiere. Advertising a certified banger like this is one way to get people talking for that show.

I’m cool with either. I don’t think WALTER needs a super long run and I’ve wanted Sheamus to finish the Grand Slam for a while now. Dude has been an MVP alongside Rollins for a few years now

According to PW Insider, Wade Barrett is slated to be at tomorrow's Friday Night Smackdown Season Premier. Barrett has been part of the NXT broadcast team since his return to WWE. While it has not been confirmed at this point numerous sources have said that he will be calling the show along with Michael Cole, as Pat McAfee will be fulfilling his ESPN commitments.
