Match 1: MITB Ladder Match: ***
I was actually surprised that this match led off the show. Overall, it was a decent match with two above average spots and one very good high spot. I was hoping for an RKO off the ladder and I'm gald they delivered. The Green Bay Plunge on Hornswoggle was sick as well. However, the spot of the night had to go to Edge and Jeff Hardy. When I saw this setting up I thought for sure someone was going to run in and break it up before it happened. It had the potential to be extremely dangerous. When Edge went out on the stretcher, I got annoyed because I figured he would come back out and weasal his way to a win.
Kennedy winning was probably the best decision, only if he holds the briefcase for a good 8 - 12 months. He needs more build to be a credible contender, otherwise, he will be fed to Cena or Taker. Overall, not the best ladder match but fun nonetheless.
Match 2: Khali vs Kane: **
The was, by far, Khali's best match to date. It was still pretty average at best and not good enough to merit more than two stars. Khali looked to be as mobile as he has ever been and did a great job of helping Kane with the Slam. The problem was, the Slam will not be remembered in 6 months, let alone 20 years like Hogan/Andre. It was a fairly lame tribute if you ask me.
Khali winning was the right choice. Kane's best is behind him and they need to build Khali up so he can be fed to Cena at some point this year.
Match 3: Benoit vs MVP: ***
Everyone thought Benoit would do the job once again, so the outcome was definitely a surprise. I presume Benoit got the victory to have some momentum heading into his move to Raw. He will probably drop the belt to MVP within the month.
Despite the loss, this match did wonders for MVP. His entrance was the best of the night, he showed his charisma, and he hung with Benoit for the duration. Benoit proved once again why he is great. He put MVP over without having to drop the belt. Not many wrestlers have that ability.
Match 4: Undertaker vs Batista: **** 1/2
I was so shocked by this match that I had to watch it twice with a clear head. When all was said and done, this was the match of the night and one of the best mania matches I have ever watched. It stole the show. I was on the edge of my seat the entire match. Great spots, back and forth action, near falls, great reversals.
As great as Taker was, this was no carry job. Batista was on the top of his game like it was 2005 again. Either Batista got worse before he got better, or he just does not try unless its Wrestlemania. Either way, the inconsistency has hurt him and it is probably the leading cause of the title change. Hopefully, last night was a wakeup call and turning point for Batista. He actually looked like the power wrestler he is supposed to look like.
Despite the inexplicable mid card slot, this match was booked perfectly. batista had to drop the belt to regain his diminishing fan base. Hopefully Batista can stay healthy and perform up to this level on a consistent basis.
Match 5: ECW Originals vs New Breed ** 1/2Why didn't they make this extreme rules? Why did the Originals win? Why did Burke dress like a gay matador? So many questions, so few answers. This match was nothing special at all. It wouldn't even mainevent a free TV show. This was the one match that needed a gimmick, yet we get a regular eight man tag match that lasts 10 minutes. I'm glad the Originals got their time to shine, but the booking was all wrong. Worst booked match of the night.
Match 6: Battle of the Billionaires **
For all the hype, this match delivered less than I thought it would. If not for Austin and Shane, this match would have received zero stars from me. Did Lashley even do anything after he destroyed Estrada? I barely noticed him. Why the hell did Austin stun Trump and not Lashley? The overprotection of Lashley has got to stop.
Match 7: Ashley vs Melina: Zero stars
What was the point of the lumberjills? They did nothing. This match was nothing but a bathroom break and bong hit.
Match 8: Cena vs. HBK: ****
This match would have been the match of the night if not for Taker/Batista. The build and storytelling were great. I love how it started off slow and ended fast. Just a great match. HBK working Cena's leg was brilliant. Cena sold it well, then forgot he was supposed to have a hurt leg later on.
The pile driver on the steps was a great spot. The ending of the match brought this to 4 stars. I love when wrestlers kick out of finishers at Wrestlemania. For a while it was impossible to tell who was going to win. Despite the selling error, Cena wrestled another great match.
The only thing wrong with this match was the lack of a Cena heel turn. HBK was acting heel but he clearly had the crowd support. The perfect time for Cena to make a turn was when the ref was lecturing him right before the super kick. Cena should have given the FU to the ref. I was waiting for it to happen but it never did.
Overall Wrestlemania Ranking: 2.5 stars out of 5
