John Cena’s WWE schedule has been significantly lighter this year than it has in any other year since he was made the company’s top guy over a decade ago. According to CageMatch.net, Cena has only had 44 matches this year, and according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, that number won’t be much higher by the end of this year.

Cena is currently off filming the second season of the Fox reality show American Grit, and according to Meltzer, he is scheduled to appear at Survivor Series next month, but he won’t return to being a weekly character on WWE television until next year.

John Cena is listed for Survivor Series, which surprises me. But that’s the only listing he’s got until the first of the year. He’s gone filming that American Grit show right now.

John Cena hasn’t even wrestled in 50 matches this year

WWE is reportedly open to having Cena be a heel because of his part-time status. So, we could finally see WWE’s ultimate good guy turn bad when he returns to the company next year, which is something that pro wrestling fans have been wanting to see for more than a decade.
----------------------

I don't know how true that statement is about them wanting him to be a heel but only being scheduled 44 matches is down so much from what he used to do. I bet a huge part of him is relieved. I would say he can focus on his family and relationship, like i.e. having kids and getting married but it doesn't seem to be something he wants, at least not with Nikki.

If he doesn't go heel in 2017, it isn't happening.

I doubt he'll be away till 2017, he'll probably be returning in time for Survivor Series.

I personally don't see a problem with Cena having "time off"
from in-ring competition. It will help keep the focus on the
guys who now truly deserve it.

A.J Styles, Kevin Owens, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins...
These guys are the future...so in my opinion Cena should
take a step back.

I'm guessing if they do turn Cena heel...it will have something
to do with him equaling/breaking Ric Flair's Record.

Those guys, the women I think and maybe Rusev and Reigns might make it over with a heel turn or double turn w/Rusev.

Big Cass as well and the big guy from New Day along with Wyatt.

Not having Cena around lately has made me appreciate him more. And that doesn't mean I am happy that he's gone. I like seeing him as the part time character and it makes him seem much better then when he is around. Cena, in my opinion, has gotten much better over the last couple of years. His matches have been much more enjoyable. His US open challenge was one of the absolute best, if not the best, part of WWE in 2015.

I still don't believe he is turning heel anytime soon, though. Cena turning heel, in my view, will be even more profound than when Hogan did. Not as big a deal as Hogan, of course, because that was THE heel turn of all time. However, Hogan turning heel really didn't change him a whole lot. Yeah, he acted cowardly and stopped hulking up. But Hogan very often wrestled and behaved like a heel anyway. And by the time the heel turn came around, he already had fans hating him due to his notorious politicking, negative comments about wrestlers behind the scenes as being inferior to him, his thin skin and the very fact that he was never TRULY welcomed by the WCW fan base. Hogan turning heel was just an official turn on the fans.

Cena, on the other hand, is really the definition of a true face. He's so fair. He compliments his enemies. He tends to almost always play fair. It's really hard to find someone in wrestling history who really fits the face role more perfectly than John Cena. So if Cena does turn heel at some point, it will be the most monumental heel turn in history IMO.

Still don't see it happening though.

Well...yes...I guess I just listed those four as they are the main focus of
the 2 major titles at the moment...as Cena would directly take the spotlight
from those guys in particular.

The entire women's roster is amazing...I actually only watch the Women's
matches on youtube...so of course I rate all of them.

Reigns & Rusev are both great...but I'm more of a Rusev fan myself...
It would be great in future if he was given a shot at Owens for the
Universal Title...but I don't expect it anytime soon.

I'm pretty sure both Big Cass and Big E are future main event stars...
I'm actually expecting Big Cass to be the stand out in the 2017 Royal Rumble...
He won't win it...but I expect an early entry and a high elimination count....

And Bray Wyatt...my favorite male competitor in the WWE...I truly hope
he is part of the future for the company...and not just the Eater of Pin-falls.

It is funny because a lot of people that couldn't stand Cena all want him back to being full time again.

I am not sure if they are desperate for the show to improve or they finally wanna admit Cena ain't that bad.

Cena's more than earned respect at this point and considering his age and the fact a lot of other wrestlers on both shows are stepping up, he deserves to take it a bit more easy. Especially since he has plenty of doors elsewhere and I'm sure he'll still be making big bucks after he leaves WWE.

I am not one of those people. :pity:

I hope he does continue to take it easy and take time away while we enjoy the up-and-coming talent.
