John Cena is teaming up with Warner Bros for a role in an upcoming movie.
It was revealed on Wednesday that Cena will have a starring role as a villain in the Looney Tunes movie Coyote vs. Acme. Cena is playing the former boss of Wile E. Coyote's lawyer in the film, which is a live-action/animated hybrid and is based on a 1990 article that was published in the New Yorker.
Deadline wrote that the film "follows Wile E. Coyote, who after ACME products fail him one too many times in his dogged pursuit of the Roadrunner, decides to hire a billboard lawyer to sue the ACME Corporation. The case pits Wile E. and his lawyer against the latter’s intimidating former boss (Cena), but a growing friendship between man and cartoon stokes their determination to win."
The film is being directed by Dave Green. James Gunn, who is the creator of the Peacemaker series that Cena stars in on HBO Max, is one of the producers for the movie. It was also announced today that Peacemaker has been renewed by HBO Max for a second season.
The scheduled release date for Coyote vs. Acme is July 21, 2023. The Hollywood Reporter noted that production on the movie is set to begin in New Mexico in late March.
Cena most recently appeared for WWE during his "Summer of Cena" set of events last summer, along with wrestling a dark match when SmackDown took place at Madison Square Garden in September. He lost to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam last August.
During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last month, Cena was asked if he'll be returning to WWE for this year's WrestleMania.
"WrestleMania is usually in the cusp of late March, early April. I don't know if I'm going to make it this year. That's a good conundrum to have because there's a lot of good opportunities coming up, which I would love to take. And if all those things line up, I don't know if I'll be able to make WrestleMania," Cena said.
"But I will tell you and everybody out there watching, I'm not done with WWE by a long shot. That's my home, I love it. I was able to go back during the summer for a few months and entertain audiences when they welcomed audiences back to arenas. So, I've far from had my last performance."
