Disgraced former wrestler Joey Ryan was fired from his job at Disneyland in California.
The L.A. Times reported the news Wednesday that Ryan (Joseph Meehan) had worked for three months on the Jungle Cruise attraction on a probationary period. Park officials declined to hire him for a full-time role, but also declined to say why.
However, the news comes days after a picture of Ryan working on the ride went viral:
From the Times piece headlined 'Disneyland employed a professional wrestler accused of sexual harassment:'
Officials did say that their screening process includes a criminal background check, but that it did not alert them about the harassment accusations against him.“Mr. Meehan is no longer employed by us,” a Disneyland spokesperson said, declining to elaborate on why he was not given a permanent job and whether the harassment allegations played a role in that decision.
In the summer of 2020 as part of the #SpeakingOut movement, Ryan was accused of sexual assault and harassment by a multitude of women. He was fired from Impact Wrestling and also shut down his Bar Wrestling indie group amidst attempts to apologize, explain and rationalize his behavior. He hasn't wrestled since the early summer of 2020.
He later filed a $10 million lawsuit against Impact and $15 million lawsuits against three accusers. All of the suits were dismissed or dropped by Ryan, but as the Times pointed out, Ryan's attorney has filed a federal case regarding one that was thrown out due to an anti-SLAPP statute "which can be used to prevent powerful entities from intimidating critics for practicing free speech."
