The 85th Academy Awards® will include a tribute to the James Bond movie franchise, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, the telecast’s producers announced today.
“We are very happy to include a special sequence on our show saluting the Bond films on their 50th birthday,†said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “Starting with ‘Dr. No’ back in 1962, the 007 movies have become the longest-running motion picture franchise in history and a beloved global phenomenon.â€

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar® Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

As a massive Bond fan this is great news. Nice touch for the Oscars to put the spotlight on the Bond franchise considering it has been going strong for 50 years. Whilst it has rarely been acknowledged with nominations and awards at the Oscars it is a highly successful franchise and this would be one of the most critically acclaimed films of the series. There is a good chance it will be nominated for at least a couple of awards, definitely one for best original song, and it may sneak into one of the final spots for Best Picture.

It would be ironic if it didn't. Can't see it getting nominations personally, the Oscars don't normally go for Bond.

I'd say after the amount of positive reviews it got, it should get a few nods. A tribute is just as good though. Something the people behind Bond should be proud of.

I am very confident it will get a nomination, if not a win, for the best original song. Ironically nearly half the previous Oscar nominations for Bond were for it's theme songs. It has great reviews and with the larger pool of Best Picture nominations it might get a spot. As for the acting awards I don't think anyone will be able to break into that top five even though Bardem and Dench were fantastic. I assume that it will be nominated for some technical awards as well.

Well a tribute to a long and lucrative franchise is a given here, but I personally don't think Skyfall should be nominated for any big awards, seeing as I didn't find it as good as Casino Royale and thought it was quite dull imo.

Yeah I think the oscars normally see Bond as already having the box office sucess and being famous around the world, so it doesn't need the awards attention, also it doesn't quite fit in with the image of being a serious human story or a glossy malodrama.

This is why the Oscars fail.

Nobody watches that shit in droves like a good old fashioned blockbuster.

You want relevance? Have and Action and Comedy category, it is easy to make people cry, it is alot harder to make them laugh or scare them.

I am a big James Bond fan as well but I don't see Skyfall getting anything. It has always seemed like the Bond films are just compared to other Bond films and not other movies out there. Skyfall is an outstanding movie in its own right, but since it is JB, people just lump it in with the other franchise films. That said, Skyfall is definitely my favorite and I have seen every one multiple times with the exception of Quantum of Solace, which was horrible. :)
