I don't know if most of you know who David Schultz is. Back in the 1980's, during the first wrestling boom, Vince McMahon was a bit obsessed with making people stop talking about wrestling being fake. When a man named John Stossel asked Schultz if wrestling was fake, Schutlz hit him twice in the head. WWE settled a lawsuit with Stossel and fired Schultz. Schultz has maintained to this day that he only attacked Stossel because Vince McMahon ordered it.
Schultz was not the only one to do something like this. Hulk Hogan did and Vader did too. Haku bit the nose off a man who called wrestling fake and then he beat up the man's three friends. Harley Race was known to have bloodied up a few guys who taunted him about the business being fake.
We all know what wrestling is now. It is not fake, and I take offense to anyone who thinks it is fake. Is it scripted? Yeah mostly. Are they really beating each other up? No, not really. But does that make wrestling fake?
No, it doesn't. Cheerleading is a sport. Is cheerleading fake? No it's not. Gymnastics are choreographed. Are they fake? No, they are not.
We know what wrestling is. It is people using well practicing manuevers to make it seem like they are fighting. And we know this for a fact since kayfabe died. Even though some people cling to kayfabe, they don't do it like they used to.
So, no, wrestling is not fake. The only way it would be "fake" is if we replace the wrestlers with CGI.
So why does it seem like wrestling being real or fake is the theme of Wrestlemania this year? I mean, Ronda Rousey is coming right out telling everyone wrestling is fake and that no one can beat her. It seems silly because if wrestling IS fake like she claims, no one has even tried to beat her. They are just doing their jobs. So her claim seems pretty stupid. But I know it is just a way to get her over as a heel.
On Raw this week, HHH broke kayfabe and made comments about the realness or fakeness of wrestling. Braun Strowman attacked a man who called wrestling fake.
Some people think Roman Reigns faked leukemia. I really hope WWE does not use that as an angle, but I have a feeling they will.
Real this, fake that. I mean is this really the best thing to be doing leading up to the biggest wrestling night of the year?
