I personally think that Cena should have gotten the win over Wyatt. He's the number one contender for the company's world title, losing to someone who hasn't even challenged for the belt yet would seem a bit illogical honestly. As for his popularity, I would assume that people enjoy him because he's a superman(haven't heard this before!) kind of built. Smiling, fighting for the good and winning. If he loses a lot, people probally won't want to get behind him as much, but I'm sure some still would, just not a lot. A lot of his fans seems to be kids who want a hero, and Cena is that hero.

Cena draws young man.
To be fair, Wrestlemania largely draws based on brand name now. It's a much bigger event and spectacle than it's ever been. The matches matter and draw as well, of course, but I'm more than certain that if Cena wasn't on the card, the event would still draw huge, at least within the 900,000 range.

True, but I was alluding to the additional 200,000 buys he does bring in.
John Cena with a compelling enough opponent and circumstance blows any other competitor out of the water.
I'm predicting a drop off relatively soon. Taker's streak is out of the bag and WM 30 was clearly marking the beginning of a turn.
I'm no prophesying a huge dip, but more of a downward turn where buys hover around the 800,000 to 900,000 range.

If Rock works WM 31 then the drop will begin the year after. The quality won't drop but I believe the interest will begin to wane slightly.

Is Cena's popularity genuine?

Well, that's hard to say. I guess you'd have to define how you view "genuine." Cena has the younger fan base in the palm of his hands, including some of the older--age wise/newer fan base (let's say fans who started watching 5-6 years ago). With that being said, when adults take younger kids to see wrestling, it's easy for them to cheer along with whoever their kid, niece, nephew, etc., is cheering for. Cena is viewed as a hero and superman-like character: it's easy to cheer for him, in other words. Plus, Cena is simply a likeable guy. When your at an event and you see him come out and get all fired up....you hear the crowd start to cheer.....it's hard not to mark for him.

To answer the question upright, I think a lot of his popularity isn't genuine (always). I feel that because he's been put in the main event status for so long and been unstoppable for so long, people cheer/boo, give him a response, simply because they know that when Cena comes out, he's going to be facing someone bigger--you know your getting the main event and a show. Does this mean that Cena is the right man for the job? Personally, I don't think he always needs to be. But WWE feels this way.

In the end, I think that WWE fans, in general, respect Cena and will cheer for him simply because he's likeable, works hard, has a good look, positive image for kids, and he has an intense personality. The Rock, Stone Cold, Hogan, received cheers because they could always work a crowd, they fit their character well, put on a show, had a great character, and no one forced them into main events, they were placed there because they were the best night in and night out.

I am not saying any of this to disrespect Cena, but rather point out that he got to where he's at because of hard work backstage and dedication. He didn't get to where he's at because of over-the-top talent like The Rock and Stone Cold had.

More than buy rates i think what Cena brings is merchandise sales as well as a lot of exposure with what he does outside the ring.

I am not saying he doesn't draw, ofcourse he does but I don't think the company would lose a LOT if he wasn't on a PPV card. They might lose a lot on the merchandise front.

At the end of the day, the guy works hard and has definitely earned it, he wasn't handed anything because of his pedigree unlike some other stars (deservingly and otherwise) and while I really think his whole gimmick and in ring performance is far from entertaining, he's still doing it, and didn't bitch and moan (as far as I know atleast).

He's a good businessman, a decent entertainer but a 'meh' wrestler IMO.

While Vince McMahon is continuing to allow John Cena to win matches to keep his fans happy and keep him popular we will never know if his fans are genuine. He needs to take heavy losses to see who really is interested in John Cena and if John Cena can still be as popular when taking losses.
