This kid came from a culture with such ridiculous fanaticism for superstition, and anyone different especially little kid are regarded as gifted. It wasn't just the dad, but the whole society where they live are of the opinion that the kid was gifted for liking cigarettes.. This is how stupid Indonesian can be.
Adhyanta can probably give a better first hand view, but from my various visits to Malaysia and Indonesia, other than the capital city, the towns and villages have this 'relax' culture where they just sit around all day not really doing anything. Some bored dad probably thought it would be funny to try this.
This kid is a champ. I've been smoking for about ten years now and I can clearly recall the one time where I smoked two packs in one day (50 smokes) and felt like a 225 lb bag of ass afterwards. I can't even fathom smoking 40 a day every day.
