A teacher of special needs children in Indiana is speaking out with other Christian parents and students by demanding LGBT kids be banned from a Sullivan High School prom. When asked, teacher Diana Medley responded to a reporter that she believes gay people have no purpose in life, and agrees that anti-gay parents and students should create a separate, “traditional” prom that would ban gay students from attending. Sullivan High School itself is allowing all students to the official prom, but these militant anti-gay Christians are trying to get students to attend their prom instead of the school’s official prom.

“Diana Medley is a special education teacher in town. She doesn’t believe anyone is born gay,”mywabashvalley.com reports:

“I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal,” said Medley.
“Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don’t agree with them, but I care about them. It’s the same thing with my special needs kids, I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason,” said Madley.

“‘So the same goes for gays? Do you think they have a purpose in life?’ No I honestly don’t. Sorry, but I don’t. I don’t understand it. A gay person isn’t going to come up and make some change unless it’s to realize that it was a choice and they’re chosing [sic] God,” said Medley.

Medley, sadly, is in good company. As mywabashvalley.com reports, students, parents, and Christian pastors met at a local church to discuss gay students at prom, and they’re ganging up to raise money for a separate prom.

This video below (unfortunately poor quality, but you can see the original at mywabashvalley.com,) shows not one LGBT person speaking for LGBTQ kids, but it does show a small Christian war against them. This is organized bullying of LGBTQ students and there could be federal civil rights issues here. Hopefully the ACLU and other civil rights groups will investigate.

Medley should be placed on immediate suspension and steps should be taken to ensure she receives the counseling she needs before she is allowed back into a classroom. She has no business teaching or counseling any student right now if she places her personal religious beliefs above her job and fiduciary responsibilities to children, and if believes that gay people have no purpose in life.

How can an LGBTQ student possibly be forced to be “taught” by someone who thinks they have no purpose in life and should “choose God” over being who they are?

Fortunately there is a Facebook page to support the inclusive prom, Support the Sullivan High School Prom for All Students.

Dan Savage has a few thoughts. Here are a few excerpts:

Let’s pause here for a moment to feel the love. Because what says “love” quite as loudly as “you’re not wanted and God hates you”?

Let’s pause here to grieve for all the special education students in Sullivan, Indiana. Students with learning disabilities have it hard enough without getting stuck with mentally challenged special ed teachers.

You know else has it hard enough? Queer kids growing up in Sullivan, Indiana, population 4,249.

And here’s one’s for all you “not all like that” Christians out there: Sullivan First Christian Church needs to hear from Christians who think it’s wrong—who think it’s un-Christian—for a Christian church to serve as a meeting place for a hate groups that exists only to exclude LGBT adolescents from a milestone like prom. Sullivan First Christian’s contact page is here. They’re phone number is 812-268-4348. Give ‘em a shout.

The Christians who started the drive for a separate no gays prom started a Facebook group, which has since disappeared, but I was able to grab some screenshots. Feel the Christian love:

Wow.

This is just outrageous and unbelievably baffling that someone like this is teaching public school, let alone a special-needs class. And even more-so that she actually has the support of their community. It just goes to show how intolerant and ignorant these bible-thumpers can be sometimes and is one of the primary reasons I have issues with faith.

Gay rights aren't being won fast enough, I'm so sick of hearing from people like this. I like Dan Savage calling for the Christians who disagree to make their voices heard, they are probably the only ones with a chance of penetrating the perceptions of these fundies.

On the contrary, every media outlet that has been reporting on this story is projecting her and her supporters in a very negative light. I think the general population for the most part currently supports the LGBT community, it's just a lot of people with the power to make changes that still haven't gotten on board. Even the US president has no issue with them. The only people that are still against it are people opposing it strictly for religious reasons. All it would take is the next pope to say "God accepts everyone, even homosexuals." and that would be the end of it.

This is pretty much the reason why I choose to be an Atheist.

That isn't a good reason tbh.

I became an atheist, because of simple logic and forward thinking.

Anywho, this bitch is a special ed. teacher, guess we know why.

"Logic" isn't a good reason to be an atheist either.

Wait whys that woman even speaking? If she's so Christian and follows every word of the bible she should be chained up in the kitchen or bedroom just waiting for her hubby to come home and please his every whim. The increasing non reliance of religion in our culture has seen women now treated as equal, but she obviously wants it back to the good old days of women as slaves and mere playthings for men. Get too it.

She should be banned from teaching, someone as prejudiced as this shouldn't have anything to do with children. I can't believe that this sort of discrimination is still continuing, I thought that as a Christian she should love everyone and treat everyone with respect. This is such a backwards point of view.

It is ridiculous that this is happening within a school. If the LGBT community is not safe from discrimination at institutions such as high schools, where are they safe?

Separate proms? Like separate Bathrooms? Maybe special camps? Sound familiar? The problem with many Christians like her is she believes that anything her religion teaches is wrong is a direct attack on her religious freedoms, and so while she claims that its not hate she takes steps that she feels are just her expressing her freedom of religion. Which sadly it is, however that same action creates the very culture of hate even among her own supporters that she says she is trying not to create.

I am a Christian myself and I do not support any event that excludes anyone from participating due to their gender, race, religion or sexual orientation. Many things we are taught as Christian children I still believe to this day and feel that people like this lady have forgotten. Regardless if homosexuality is a sin or not, a choice or not, even Jesus in the bible welcomed sinners into the church, welcomed to his table for a meal and went out of his way to be around these people. Why? Because the bible said to love one another...not love the people you agree with.

As a Christian church if you wish to exclude homosexuals from your church it is your right to do so, but I don't believe that to be very Christian, but again that is your right to do so....however it is not your right to try and get them banned from everywhere else just because you might be there too.

The church and government are to be separate. This is a truth even mentioned in the bible. It's a shame so many christians have apparently forgotten that and feel the need to want to dictate everything we do. No one is going to be lead to accepting god as there lord when you tell certain groups to stay away.
