Hogan often gets mixed reviews (if you want to call it that), so, I’m just wondering what my fellow forum peeps think. If you hate him “just because”, this is putting aside the hate and focusing on actual reasons for either liking or not liking him. IMO, we owe a lot to Hogan for the WWF boom, and he really wasn’t as garbage as a wrestler as he was somewhat presented as, I recommend watching his matches in Japan (some can be found on YouTube, unless they’ve been removed by now), he was just limited.

I’m more interested in why people hate him, but, I’ll read each answer, positive or negative, of course.

People hating him are based of hearsay and bitterness from so-called experts and wrestlers who couldn't work with him so they could get that Hogan money.

He caused 2 wrestling booms and put more asses in seats than anyone Austin included.

And Suburban Commando was the shit.

Hulk Hogan was what made the main stream pay attention to wrestling. Not only was he a wrestling star, but he was a straight up mega celebrity. Look at Rocky 3, and see the impact his small role had in the film, had on the industry.

Watch some of his matches in the 1980s and listen to the reactions. These new "stars" can't even sell out 15000 seat arenas for a PPV now. More people watched Saturday Night Main Event to see Hogan, than there are people watching RAW, Smackdown, Impact, and AEW combined. No comparisons.

Also, if there was a Twitter back then, you wouldn't see Hogan crying on it like these wusses do today.

I agree with you on the 90s. I think it was 1991 when he had started to get stale and the fans started to turn on him. His initial jump to WCW was good at first, then it went down hill during the Dungeon of Doom. Then the nWo breathed new life into him.

Hogan as a character? Great. Did a lot for the business. I loved his infamous heel turn forming the nWo.

Hogan as a backstage politician/glass ceiling builder? Not a fan.

HH is the biggest legend/icon in pro-wrestling; Rock is the biggest star/draw

Created 2 wrestling booms; if he were a young guy, he'd be creating another one right now. I think he is underrated, honestly.

Hogans reputation is based on hear say and one sided stories.

Just like everyone....it all depends on your point of view.

He's ok, I guess. I've never really been a fan and he used to really annoy me, but I've thawed out on him now he only makes occasional appearances. I also missed his prime, so that prob changes how I see him.

Lets be clear, wrestling in Hogan's time was different to wrestling today. Kayfabe has evolved massively. So shitting on the modern era is silly as its simply not as easy today to get as over as Hogan did because the market has changed so drastically. Lets not pretend for a second Hogan wouldn't have got the Cena-treatment if the fanbase of his time was like the fanbase of Cena's time.

That said Hogan is definitely iconic as he dominated his era and really made wrestling super-mainstream-popular and has to be on any wrestling mount rushmore.

I think Hogan - is held in such a high esteem to an American fan base, in a way he isn't seen around the world. Plus the racist stuff - sort of doesn't sit well in the same way with an international audience.
