They're just saying right now it's a herniated disc...but they suspect it's probably much worse than that. Just the disc...maybe 6-8 months....something worse...well...look at Helms.

Dr. Maroon, who operated on John Cena’s injured neck earlier today in Pittsburgh, told WWE’s website that Cena will be able to start working out next week. The former WWE Champion is expected to be back in the ring within 2-4 months.

The earliest he’s expected back is the Survivor Series pay-per-view, which is in his hometown of Boston, MA or the Royal Rumble 2009 at the latest.

2-4 months? That's it? Benoit was out for like a year! If you add in the John Cena Superman Factor it is like maybe 5-6 weeks!

Atleast he didn't need neck fusion surgery, which is likely why it's only 2 - 4 months, which is good. I hope Cena stays out the full 4 months to recover fully, because he can't afford to go down with another, and more serious injury the next time. I hope Cena the best.

This means now he and Orton will probably return at the same time. Hm.

I personally didn't get enough Cena. He was gone and I wanted him back, he didn't really do crap this time around except win the Rumble, hopefully when he comes back he finally gets the strap.

Thank god he's not seriously injured (12-15 months), hopefully he'll be back by Survivor Series...this will probably be where WWE brings out Orton, who says that he lied about the motorcycle accident...if it isn't real. Last night when Cena was announced as injured I thought it was a work to keep him out for a month or two becuase Orton returned and "injured" him.
