One of John Cena's most common criticisms from the WWE fans is that his character never changed, when in reality it did many times over the years. Before the WWE John was "The Prototype" in OVW, then he when he got to the main roster on Smackdown was using his real name but he wasn't doing the rapping gimmick yet, he was still wearing the same attire like his Prototype character with the short colored tights, the kneepads and the boots with his wristbands. He started rapping at the end of 2002 when he did it at a Smackdown Halloween party dressed up as Vanilla Ice. Then stuck with that until 2005 when he dropped the Thuganomics music for My Time Is Now, but Cena was still wearing the chains and the spinning necklace with the WWE Championship that spins around in the centerpiece (he had a United States Championship that did that). Then he got to RAW and was slowly starting to get away from that hip hop image with more serious promos but still rapped occasionally. Then John Cena ditched it completely with the Marine thing in 2006 and 07. It wasn't until 2008 that he became the Cena we know now but he still wears the same clothes from the Cenation Era and his music never changed since 2005. So it's really only been the last 10 years, minus his theme music which he's had longer than that, not his whole career. So what's the problem with this ?

Because the vast majority of wrestling fans are casual and they only see certain cross sections of anyone's career. As much as I am not a Cena fan, it's undeniable that his character has been pretty dynamic over the years

because they're criticizing anything for the sake of hating on him. Same is happening with Reigns where they try to find problems in his performances even though he's doing better than most of their favorites. I guess it's a part of being the face of a company now.. you just kinda get shit on for doing your job well. Another one Cena got a lot was the "5 moves of doom" nonsense which basically means, if you have 5 signature moves that people know and react to, that's a bad thing.. somehow

I liked cena back when he was the doctor of thuganomics. That was my favourite cena over the years. Then when I came back in 2015 after a 10 year hiatus, I saw the change and that most fans disliked him. I started to aswell... but as time went on, he grew on me again. I started to acknowledge his longevity and loyalty to the company. He may not be my favourite... but he is up there. Would like to see a throwback to the thuganomics days... but I understand why it will most likely never happen and I'm ok with that. It would be a little cheesy probably lol.

I enjoy the ones who say Cena needs to do something different and be heel, like he has never been heel before.
