No shot. Really? :deadcat
I wish I was kidding

On a recent edition of his “Strictly Business” podcast, Eric Bischoff addressed Scott D’Amore’s removal from TNA Wrestling and believes AEW is partly to blame. He said,

“Right now, AEW is proving to be bad for the industry, in particular being bad for [TNA Wrestling] and people like Scott D’Amore.”

That’s wild. I think the biggest problem is just the way he’s phrasing in r here because if he just said some thing, like A&W, in general existing made it hard for TNA and ring of honor to exist. He’d be right, but it had absolutely nothing to do with Scott D’Amore being fired.

It’s weird because I think it’s a double edge sword. Because I don’t think it’s bad for the overall health of the industry because I think having someone on the nearest size of WWE gives the higher boys more leverage, but I do think AEW’s creation more or less just t created two monopolies, where is AEW‘s place had previously been filled by like three or four.

That all being said, I mean GCW is killing it. MLW is killing it even women of wrestling. It is getting some decent ratings on TV right now. Rising tides lifts all boats.

if the argument was ''AEW created some challenged for smaller brands by scooping up talent and making it more difficult for certain promotions to keep up'' sure, that's a valid statement ( though one could say that would have not stopped WWE from poaching anyone who looks like a star the second they get any hype). But to phrase it as bad for the industry? I'm fairly certain the industry is made up for 90% workers and maybe 10% if that of owners, so people getting paid is a good thing. And yeah, the scott thing is just insane, without AEW around, they may have never pushed themselves seeing that there IS a market for non wwe - not to mention aew helped them out in the pandemic.

I would say that regardless of AEW's existence, wrestling has never been more accessible. And I think two monopolies still creates more long term fans, and generational fans, who will have kids who will all be potential customers to the indies.

I definitely started giving more promotions a chance after AEW came around. (Tho i did try to watch ROH, there tv schedule just was so confusing) but now I’ll watch whatever I have access to tbh

like tl dr - i think in the end AEW was proof of concept that wrestling is a popular medium that's not dying or going away

I don’t think wrestling is as mainstream as it once was and I don’t think it ever will be again but but the idea that wrestling appetite would ever die is definitely delusional.

I think there was a small time when WWE was legitimately a monopoly before Ring of Honor, or TNA had a chance to elevate that interest dwindled because of some wrestling fans don’t like the WWE model, but as long as there are enough options out there wrestling fans will always exist. They just want an alternative that they can access.

I honestly didn’t even think 2019 AEW was good, but they built an audience because they had legit PPV and had a weekly tv on tnt in their first year.

Most wrestling fans don’t want to buy dvds or find where you stream.

I believe it. I kept telling you AEW was the legacy successor of TNA.

That’s why NWA wanted to get in cw. Even as bad as their product can be, just being on cw would have meant probably 250K fans tuning in.

I think wrestling is getting a little bit mainstream again, at least WWE, which hopefully helps out the others. People check that out who never really watched or haven’t in years, whatever. Then like it and check out other promotions. But yeah it’s not what it was in the 90s, but I think it’s a chance it can at least get to where it gets talked about a lot outside the wrestling circle
