The sad thing is that while the match would never happen Hogan will go on to say that it did and that doing so single handedly saved WWE from some perceived doom in a way only he could fathom. Also, that he introduced HHH and Stephanie, taught Vince how lift, and resurrected Jesus on the third day.

Hogan has been crying for a match for a couple years now but he hasn't been able to pass the physical. That's why a couple months ago when Hogan, Flair and Shawn Michaels were interupted by the Big Show that Flair was the only one to try and fight Show, resulting in him getting knocked out. There was obviously a reason it was Flair, who although older, is still more capable of being physical than Hogan is. Michaels ego is too massive to allow himself to get knocked out and Hogan would have shattered into a fine powder.

Hogan won't get his match, but I don't think he really expects to. Not getting the match gives him the opportunity to make up a wild story in the future about why it never happened. Likely he will claim the match never happened because no one felt they were worthy of retiring Hulk Hogan.

*Hogan vs Rock III, you mean. Part II happened at No Way Out the following year.
