I think Bret must have suspected it. After all, he'd had a number of tense conversations with Vince beforehand. During one of them, Vince said he'd have to sue Bret because he wanted to exersise his creative rights that were owed to him in the last 30 days of his contract, so, I don't think Bret was a hundred percent sure that he'd get fair treatment in his match with Shawn. I wouldn't have after my employer wanted to sue me for going against wanting to do something that I could do, as per the conditions of my contract.

It has been a while since I have read Bret's book so I can't tell 100% that this is where I got the information from. Bret was warned by several people that the screwjob might happen. I know Vader was one of them and had either been involved in a screwjob in Japan or knew people who did. However, Bret didn't heed Vader's advice to keep out of submission holds and not let his shoulders be on the mat. He did not honestly believe it was going to happen, but he was made aware that others expected it might.

Why? What stopped him from listening to Vader? Did Bret believe fate was going to be kind to him?

I read in Bret's bio that Vince was willing to Sue him, but he ignored the fact that Bret could pull his weight just one more time. Why did he do that?
