Especially if Tony, Don and Jericho were all involved in the orchestrating of the storyline, I feel like it couldn't have been anything that would have been really detrimental to his character or career.

There's a huge misunderstanding that everyone seems to want to perpetrate. If Sammy Guevara were to debut, it would be after No Surrender, after Black Taurus had already been established. It just means that in the next set of tapings, we'll see Taurus in positions and angles that Sammy turned down.
