At Microsoft's E3 2011 keynote today at the Galen Center, Halo 4 was officially announced -- surprise! Master Chief and Cortana are back (kicking off a new trilogy, apparently), the brief teaser trailer showed. 343 Industries is at the reigns with a Holiday 2012 launch date proposed.

Obviously huge news but fuck, a new trilogy? That's ridiculous. Not to mention Bungie is gone. Still, I won't lie, I will get a 360 for all of the Halo games and Gears. The only good games on the console, I always liked Halo but ODST was a bit upsetting how bad it was milked. Believe it or not, Halo 1 and 2 are two of my most favorite FPS games and whether you like them or not, it's a fact that they are two of not only the greatest FPS games but games in general.

How? By looking at the video, the new trilogy starts where the old one finished, so there is continuity.
Making it a trilogy means is an easy way to come up with 3 games without particular problems and the eventual profits.

The fact that Master Chief gets an incorporated jetpack out of nowhere will be hard to explain though.

I know there is room for Halo 4 and it makes sense that there is but to expand to a new trilogy when the last trilogy could have closed most of the story is a little ridiculous imo. I don't know though, my step dad something about how currently the covenant and the spartans or whatever are allies. But still I find it to be ridiculous and it's not about brand loyalty or console wars for me to form that. I'll say the same thing if/when God of War 4 happens.

It just makes things easier for them. Instead of coming out with a new story every 2 years with the risk of fucking up each time, they split a longer one in 3 pieces with potential corrections when needed. Worked fine for the first trilogy. Not that I particularly care about the story anyways. Gameplay is more important.

And I forgot to mention, makes little difference that Bungie is no longer involved. The 343 studios made Halo and were part of Bungie, Microsoft just bought them. The only thing that changed is that Bill Gates now directly pays their salaries.

Sure but you have to keep the story going and fresh and every iteration changes are expected. Look at Call of Duty. They risk losing fans if they can't produce new features, gameplay elements, better online, keeping the story fresh, etc.

Lol, what? Bungie has made Halo, they have made every Halo game but since the 360, 343 has assisted but not in a major way. They have basically just been learning, forming their studio, helping for experience and really just preparing to take the helm from Bungie. I think there is a number of ex Bungie employees so that's good at least.
