I found this on Rudy Boy Gonzalez's forum and I thought it was cool because I thought the guy who performed as the original Doink, the cool, evil version, was dead. I guess not.
While I don't have full results (we'll have them shortly), there were two major events that left everyone talking.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs Matt Borne was booked and advertised leading up to this show. What was not known was that Duggan had a personal issue with Borne. It wasn't until afterwards that memories started to jog.
In a recent RF Video shoot interview, Matt Borne talks about a story where he was working for Bill Watts in Mid-South wrestling. You will need to hear the story for yourself on the shoot to get every detail.
Long story short, Mid-South was in some town and some fan jumped Jim Duggan. Borne saw what was going on, and fought with the fan that jumped Duggan. Borne fucked up the fan so bad, that he wound up knocking his eye out of the socket. This then led to a shit-load of lawsuits, with Watts, Mid-South & Duggan losing a ton of money to this fan. Furthermore, Duggan was banned from the town. Again, I don't have the specific details, and you'd have to pick up the shoot from RFVideo to get them.
To this day, Duggan held this grudge against Borne as he thought Borne went too far. Borne never was sued nor lost money/bookings/work out of the ordeal, while Duggan did.
In the back, Borne tried calling the match with Duggan, but Duggan was no-selling him. Borne must've known something was up, because according to people in the locker room, right before his match, he packed up all his gimmicks/suitcase and everything else he brought to the show, while his girlfriend or wife was outside in the car.
While fans didn't realize it right away, workers & people in the business, picked up that things weren't going right, when it took Duggan & Borne an extraordinarily long time to lock up. When they did lock up, it looked like two backyarders, as they were fighting with each other in the lock-up.
Eventually things cooled down, and they tried to put a match together. After a few minutes, Borne, doing a heel "Born Again Evil Doink" gimmick, where he is dressed up like Heath Ledger from "The Dark Knight", went for a low blow. Duggan completely no-sold the low blow. From there, the shoot was on.
Matt, pissed off that Duggan wasn't working with him, went for a takedown on Jim. Jim blocked it and both started to shoot fight in the ring. Duggan got the better of it and owned Matt from all reports. Whether Matt was still trying to work while Duggan was in complete shoot mode is up to the opinion of the viewer.
Matt eventually broke free of Duggan and powdered out. Duggan, frothing at the mouth, screamed for Matt to get back in the ring. Matt went over the rail, and in a total pro wrestling move, grabs a chair. Duggan, still screaming for Borne, grabbed his 2x4. You can't make this stuff up.
Duggan waited for Borne to get in the ring. Eventually Borne left out a side door, and by all reports, booked it from the building. Duggan, visibly pissed, stormed back to the locker room, making it clear that Borne didn't have the balls to finish the fight backstage.
Obviously Eric Tapout didn't know how to handle a situation like this, and to be honest, most indy promoters that are not established wrestlers probably would not know how to either. Duggan was flipping out and it was at that moment that Duggan was telling people the story about how Borne beat up some fan in Mid-South and Duggan took all the heat for it. Later on, when Rob Feinstein heard the story about Duggan in the back, Feinstein remembered his own shoot from several months ago. Feinstein, who conducted the shoot, told the DOI that he completely forgot about that story and it wasn't until after he heard about Duggan telling that story in the back that his memory kicked in.
