April 16, 2009 - Nathan Rees, premier of New South Wales, has confirmed that Warner Bros. and DC Comics' Green Lantern will shoot at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney. Pre-production will begin on July and filming will commence in November.
This news, which comes via The Hollywood Reporter, corroborates previous reports that director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) was scouting locations in Sydney and Melbourne last month.
The trade paper says that the film will have a budget of $150 million and that it will create some 500 jobs and include a "substantial investment" in digital effects work in Australia. The film is also expected to receive the Australian government's 15% location rebate on top of incentives from New South Wales. The declining value of the Australian dollar also figures into the studio's decision to take GL down under.
The studio is currently shooting for a December 2010, release for Green Lantern.
Yes this movie is really coming. I didn't even find out until like a week ago. Up until then it was rumors that sounded like they would never happen. I can't even describe how excited I am. I am a huge fan of Lantern. In fact he is probably my favorite DC hero, he's pretty underrated and it's awesome to see DC make a movie on someone other than Batman or Superman. By Lantern I mean Hal Jordan btw. I'd flip if it was John Stewart. I actually like John but Hal is the real Green Lantern. This is probably my most forward to looking movie right now. So what do you guys think?
Edit: Hal Jordan is Green Lantern in this movie and it's directed by Martin Campbell. He has directed Goldeneye, Casino Royale, and the Zorro movies.
