It hasn't even been officially confirmed that a new God of War is in the works and yet we've already heard what is allegedly the release date for God of War 4. Euro magazine PSM3 claims the next game in the series will be out in September 2012. That information comes by way of a "source [that] works closely with the God of War universe."
The last console outing for the series, God of War III, was released last March. God of War: Ghost of Sparta came out this past November on PSP and was the second God of War for the handheld device. Something called 'God of War 4' would likely be another console edition, but don't rule out an NGP game. Based on statements made by developer SCE Santa Monica Studio, it might not be a direct continuation of Kratos' story thus far.
"This is definitely the end of the trilogy, but we're going to continue to do God of War games," said Santa Monica director of product development John Hight last year. "We're going to be very careful about what we do; we're the keepers of the franchise and we don't want to see it ruined or polluted."
"I think there comes a time when to maintain a high level of quality... the bottom line is you can't get burned out, and the source material can't always be the same," said God of War III director Stig Asmussen prior to the game's release. "I want God of War to be one of those games where if there are more God of Wars, we're seeing them spread out over time -- it's not like our studio's making a new God of War every two or three years or something like that, and then the series becomes irrelevant.
"I like the approach of, 'We just won't make Metroid for 10 years. Why do we have to keep making Metroid?' And then when it comes back, it's fresh and you remember why you loved that game so much. I think it would be good at this point to take that approach with God of War... For a trilogy, it's great. Let's put it to bed for awhile though."
From a creative standpoint that's admirable, though it's not necessarily a sentiment that Sony will share from a business point of view. Were a new God of War released next year, that would completely contradict what Asmussen was talking about, given that it would be a gap of just 30 months between it and God of War III.

Even if it's not going to be a game based around Kratos, and don't now how it could be based on how the last game ended, unlesss it going to be a prequel, it's still good news. Everything about the previous games was great, and it's one of my favorite series of all times. Keeping the gameplay the same, and the whole greek mythology will make for another solid title. Would be nice to see them possibly go back a bit and have the game focused around the rise of Zeus.
