It wouldn't have been half the movie withoutva great director either. There's nothing overrated about Tarantino the slightest, in fact he's underrated as a director due to the controversial nature of his movies. Almost every single actor in his movies puts on a great performance which is the mark of a truly great director. Whether or not he wrote the movie is completely irrelevant considering it's not a director's job to write it.
The reason I think the script is the key is because what people remember the film for is that unique structure and how you start to work it out on further viewings, also the sharp dialogue. I am sure the actors were excited to work on such a project, but I don't see Tarantino as an actors director, he was lucky to have such a cast and we have seen post-Jackie Brown how boring his films are without them.
I own both and would rather watch Star Wars and show my nieces and nephews and (hopefully not) if I get kids, I will introduce them to the works of Geroge Lucas before Tarrantino.
