I don't think the names are generally damaging, just potentially the gimmicks that may come along with them. But it's always gonna be a case by case basis.

Like, changing Walter to Gunther but keeping all the same elements is obviously fine. Changing Dijakovic to T-Bar and giving him shitty face paint on top of a shitty name and having him be a bigger dude who loses all the time is not ideal. Could T-Bar work somehow? Maybe. But it does feel like an uphill battle with such a stupid sounding name. This new Elias/Ezekiel shit could be kinda the opposite. There's nothing really wrong with the ring name Ezekiel but the presentation of it is dumb as hell and they already had something great with Elias that there was no need to change.

Pete Dunne, as much as I like him, probably was never gonna be a top star on the main roster, at least not with the style he displayed up to this point. He could have been a decent midcard workhorse maybe. More than likely, he woulda probably ended up similar to Gable or Ricochet and just getting lost in the shuffle for long periods of time. At least as Butch, he has a spot on the show and a fills a specific role. I actually kinda like him doing this ankle biter shit. I don't think it'll be sustainable and I'm curious what lies ahead for him once this gimmick dries up. But for now, fuck it. He's making the most of it.

100% on point 3. This fabricated notion from some folks that you HAVE to choose a side is just asinine and archaic bullshit. I enjoy wrestling, and enjoy things from both WWE and AEW (also marginal TNA/GCW stuff). Name changes can be sometimes for the better, or worse, but at the end of the day I judge the person on their name.

I also think changing Pete Dunne’s name to Butch is stupid because Pete Dunne is a way better name. Other name changes just seem pointless. There was no reason to change WALTER to Gunther. Makes it look like Vince is doing it simply to put his stamp on the superstar.

A name isn’t everything but in wrestling things have to make sense. Some name changes do and some don’t.
