Per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, at one point there was an idea for The Rock to beat Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 and end his lengthy run as WWE Universal Champion. Dwayne would then “give up the title to go to Hollywood...but always call himself ‘The People’s Champion,’ which is where that idea and belt came in, which was long before the Hall of Fame ceremony.” Roman would then get the WWE Universal championship back, before eventually losing it to Cody Rhodes.
