i don't really understand the mechanics of the game quite yet so i figure just being a fighter that basically spams attack will do me well.

fighter is really simple, the champion subclass at level 3 is simple but effective aswell. I wouldn't suggest multi-classing though until a second playthrough though as the game caps at level 12

There's a companion for pretty much every class though except Bard, Monk, and Sorcerer, but those begin to be more advanced with spell slots and magic. Bard is, compared to wizard, one of the strongest classes thanks to things like Jack of All Trades, especially in the table top version. Sorcerer, it's a mixed bag but in game I found it easy to understand especially playing a Storm Sorcerer who can fly as a bonus action everytime they cast something.

Bard in the tabletop game is considered the 2nd best if you're min-maxing
