In French we have different words for holidays as a period and a holiday as one day off

Vacation is when you go on a trip, holiday is when its an actualy holiday

For me… vacation is being away from home to relax. A holiday is exclusively Christmas, thanksgiving, Halloween, etc

We would use summer vacation for school I remember tho, but a lot of times also just called summer break

We would call the summer holidays or a week off on the beach "vacances" which is very similar to "vacaciones" in Spanish or vacation
