The Chechen war took 10 years, and that was Russia against a nation of 1 million people. Ukraine has a population of 44 million. It's "easy" to occupy a city or two. But when you have an openly hostile population who would rather you fucking die than be taken over by you, you get long, dragged out guerilla warfare. that's not really the case in Ukraine, it's a divided nation in a lot of ways, and a war in southern russia is a lot different than Europe's doorstep, Putin does not have ten years here and he knows this, which is why he's about to blitz the capitol
