To get the best of MGS's story, you need to play it in chronological order, even if some of the in-jokes don't make sense.

Actually... that is missing some context, especially if you followed the trailers. Both Snake, and Fox would've been the bad people in the middle of the game. Phantom Pain was shipped incomplete.
