so in fortnite you can pay $8 and you get a battle pass that usually goes for like 3 months. its a “season” and you level up as you progress and you earn cosmetic items for leveling up.

like this seasons battle pass you can unlock the spider-man outfit and a bunch of emotes for it.

Then there’s also an item store where you can buy skins for real money. the store changes every 24 hours so it keeps you wanting to come back and check the store to see what’s on it.
