You know what's funny is that rappers are actually held to a higher standard than other artists. You don't see many people saying they prefer their rock, country or pop music to be about complex subjects. They don't even ask for crafty wordplay or anything. Just make a catchy song.
But the same people want rappers to be deep and intellectual. They have to use metaphors. They have to have storytelling. They have to do social commentary.
Or am I tripping? I mean I know pop music is criticized for being simple, but no one's calling out Weezer or some shit talking about how basic their songwriting is or some shit.
being able to write your own music regardless of genre without having to rely on ghost writers is something special. I mean I like to think someone who has made a catchy hit has succeeded in the same way a rapper slayed the fucking track. I dunno. I don't care one way or another.
I'm not saying that rap isn't better when it's lyrical or anything. But rap is the most lyrically creative form of music imo and yet it's also the most scrutinized.... for not being lyrical.
I don't know if that applies in this case. I'm trying to say that people that don't like rap will be like "it's all talking about the same thing" when a) that isn't the case and b) most other genres are more basic and repetitive
