Like I know he was still relevant in the title picture after HHH won it but I just don't remember anything specifically

TBH I think Vince and Vinny Ru knew he was going in for surgery. He's written out on 4 months later and while Austin was in the title match at SummerSlam, it was Foley that won it there and than Trips who took it from him on Raw since Austin didn't want to put over Trips I heard? After that, WWE did the 6-pack at unforgiven right? So I think Austin just floated while they came up with a way to write him out.

Yeah Austin didn't want to drop it to Trips I've heard plenty but I don't really remember the reason.

Oh yeah and then Austin fought Trips at No Mercy right? I think that was his passing of the torch since he didn't want to do it at SummerSlam so they must have known Trips was taking the spot for Austin while he was out. Must have known since Fully Loaded. It all basically leads to him giving Trips the road.

I'm thinking because Austin knew he'd be out for almost a year and probably didn't like the idea of having to let Trips take his spot and needed a way to take it back from Trips since Trips never beat him for it, but I think WWE eventually talked ssense to him since they did the singles match at No Mercy one month before he's written out if IIRC.

I’m shocked to realize Austin/McMahon was okay 15 months tbh. Feud was amazing and felt longer(but that’s a good thing to me).

"Officially" bc most people consider it starting the night after WrestleMania XIV, but I also think a lot consider it to start after the first Stunner on Vince in '97 or around Rumble time. They didn't go all in on the actual "feud" til after 'Mania tho

I can see the Rumble working too, so than it's 18 months. Still a shirt time frame when you think about it.

I wouldn't count the stunner tho. That was just Austin being Austin at the time.

I guess it just had so many moments it felt longer. But yeah I loved that feud still.
