I've never been a huge Earthbound fan. a buddy of mine loved the game on snes so i know of it but not much. I guess Earthbound on NES is the 2nd game in a trilogy called Mother in Japan

Mother 1 came out on NES and is actually localized and playable for NES on nintendo switch online. Mother 2 was earthbound that came out in america and is pretty popular. Mother 3 was on gameboy advance and never came to the US and doesn't have an official localization as of right now. the guy who made it has been out of the industry for 20 years and still gets tweets about it and basically said leave me alone and pester nintendo about it.

been some fan translations but nothing official, weird that they went from NES to SNES to GBA. that was my investigation for the day

Well the thing is that Mother 1 was supposed to come out in the US in 1990.

But then the SNES was a priority and it just wasn't released, despite being translated and ready to ship.

In fact, the roms that are online from before Earthbound Beginnings was released have been confirmed to be Phil Sandhop's official translation.

the NSO version on switch is the first official release of it?

Yeah, never came out in the US, but was supposed to. It even had a whole media campaign surrounding it like Earthbound did.

Correct, which is why it was such a big deal when it happened.

Or rather, the Wii U virtual console release.

i was going to play Earthbound on the SNES Classic system but then it was released on switch online so i figured i'd play it there and still haven't touched either.

I ended up selling my SNES Classic because most if not all the games are on switch now.
