They can't do anything about it. They tried the last few years to get the copyright extended further, even going so far as to make a new Steamboat Willie cartoon, but the courts rightfully called bullshit and refused to allow Disney's copyright to continue.

They did, but after some time, copyrights lapse. The copyright for Mickey Mouse was supposed to lapse in the 90s, but Disney and Sonny Bono basically fucked that up by adding another 30 years to it. So Copyrights now last 95 years after creation.

Or, to put it into perspective: If you wrote a book series, and had it copyrighted, you own that copyright for your whole life, and then your estate/the publishing corporation will own that copyright for another 70-95 years.
