Apparently the real reason Verne Gagne never won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship was not because the NWA thought he wasn't good enough, but because his prime coincided with Lou Thesz's, and both guys were so immensely popular as United States Champion and World Champion respectively, that NWA didn't want to ruin the box office they were getting from both guys, and they did mega-business when facing up against one another in the 50s.

So basically, the AWA became a thing because Verne was pissed that he couldn't get the prestige of the world championship, not because he was actually being snubbed by the NWA or anything. He was, in the 1950s, by far the second most popular wrestler and at times the most popular guy for the group.
